Your Child's First Dental Visit

Tips on Preparing your Child for His/Her First Dental Visit

We agree with The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) who recommend that your child should visit the dentist by his/her 1st birthday. We believe that tooth decay is a preventable disease. The sooner your child see's the dentist, the more likely they will not have to experience decay and fear of the dentist. Very young children do not need any special preparation for their first visit, and as they grow they will learn that going to the dentist is a fun and rewarding experience.

What you should expect on your first visit to our office with your child is a very positive and rewarding experience as a parent. One of the most important points that we can offer some advice on, is to never talk to your child in a negative way regarding their dental visit. Do not bribe your child or threaten them with going to the dentist, or using words such as "drill" or "shot". This only transfers anxiety and fear into their minds. Let your child know the importance of taking care of his or her teeth. Tell them that the dentist is checking to see if their teeth are healthy and strong and that one of our hygienists will be cleaning and polishing their teeth, so they will sparkle and shine!

Every child has their own level of maturity and understanding. We try to make the first visit to the dentist for older children enjoyable and positive. Your child should be informed of the visit and told that the dentist and their staff will check their teeth, explain what they are going to do and answer any of your childs' questions.
