 Nitrous Oxide

Your Pediatric Dentist may recommend nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help your child have a pleasant and relaxing dental experience.  Most children under age 5 need some adjunctive therapy to help them get through a restorative dental procedure in a non-traumatic manner, particularly if it is their first restorative experience. Almost all children respond very well to laughing gas.  They feel relaxed, happy and calm when they are given nitrous oxide.  For older children who are very anxious at the dentist, nitrous oxide can reduce or eliminate their fears about their dental treatment.

Nitrous oxide/oxygen is a blend of two gases, nitrous oxide and oxygen.  The gas is given through a small breathing mask which is placed over the child's nose, allowing them to relax, but without putting them to sleep.  The gas is mild and easily administered with normal breathing.  It is quickly eliminated from the body and is non-addictive.  While inhaling nitrous/oxygen, your child remains fully conscious (awake) and keeps all natural reflexes.  Drs. Glowinsky and Harding have many years of experience working with children and administering nitrous oxide.

Nitrous oxide may cause vomiting if a child has food in the stomach so, for your child's safety, we recommend the following on the day of their appointment.

Do not allow your child to eat or drink anything for two hours before appointment.

  • If your child eats during the restricted period we will need to reschedule their appointment.
  • Any daily/routine medications should be taken as usual on this day.
  • Please make sure that your child goes to the bathroom upon arrival at the office.
  • Let us know if your child is not feeling well (cold, fever, etc.)  We may need to reschedule their appointment.
